Frequencies and Breaking Points

Image
Frequencies and Breaking Points Pause for a moment and take a cursory look about. You shall find that evidence abound, both new and old Which prove beyond all reasonable doubt That nature’s hand has set for every heart a peculiar threshold Beyond which a hitherto ‘aye’ may become 'never' And ties once unbroken may be severed forever. A point where one gathers enough tally of the offence And decides to stomach no further an ounce of nonsense. A point where memories recede and disappear As formality fills the eye and clog the ear. A point where old vibes lose their familiar ring And pierce us with a rather vicious sting. Mark therefore the place where friendship and disrespect meet For you may severally trespass it and once never be able to retreat. Amity can be a brutal beast or a graceful horse The difference depends on how we  decide to chart its course.

The Pessimist

Image
The Pessimist I could have been the head and not the tail But I was too frightened to try and fail. I was intimidated by the requirements of a first class So I resolved to go for a gentle pass. I could have given the world a mighty invention But I feared my ideas would be met with ruthless rejection. I could have realized all the dreams I had as a child If I had not grown to believe they were impossible and wild. In the end, I built my own insurmountable obstacles The fears in my mind became inescapable manacles. From all that I truly wanted, I eventually strayed Uncertain to win the mistress, I married the maid. Is the glass half empty or half full?

The Fifth Gospel

The Fifth Gospel of Christ I have a precious little notebook in which I have gathered notes, quotes and reflections from listening to Ravi Zacharias. Some of his quotes and anecdotes have jolted me into rapturous laughter. Others have taken me into days of contemplation, shaken me into introspection and scratched me with guilt and embarrassment.  A few days ago, whilst listening to one of his messages on Christian Ethics in a secular world, Ravi referred to a powerful quote by Rodney ‘Gypsy’ Smith. After hearing it for the first time, I hit the pause button, moved the player a few seconds back and then played it again. The message was about 50minutes long but I couldn’t focus on anything else as the quote kept ringing in my head.   “There are five gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and the Christian. Most people will never read the first four.”   As I began to think of the kind of ‘gospel’ the world have read in and through my life, I realized that I have co...

Life Imitating Art: Why The Acrimony?

Image
Life Imitating Art: Why The Acrimony? Tyler Perry’s brilliance as a writer, producer and director cannot be overemphasized with the latest feather in his already majestic cap being the highly acclaimed psychological thriller, Acrimony. As an artist (and I use the word in its broader application of creative enterprise), I believe the famous filmmaker has achieved something that many artists dream about yet only a few experience: the power to provoke widespread thought. After the release of Acrimony, the man who is celebrated “among the pantheon of today’s greatest cinematic innovators” stirred up lively debates across the world and divided opinions about the two main characters. Was the faithful wife tired of standing by her deceitful husband? Was she ultimately undone by her own deep-rooted anger? Did the embattled husband redeem himself after he made it? Should he have persevered in his efforts to remarry the woman who had divorced him willfully? Would Melinda have returned ...
